4 things to do in the garden this autumn
We love hearing what you've been up to with the Things. This blog is jam packed with ideas from fellow members on how to get your garden ready for autumn hibernation.
1. Store your bike safely š²
Whether you're an all-year cycler, or a fair-weather cycler - a new shed for your bike could be just the project to keep you occupied while making some extra room in the house.
Here's what this Hackney Wick member said about renting the Circular Saw to make a shed for their bike - ā5/5 would recommend this service. I think B&Q or Homebase hire tools but they wouldnāt have come with g-clamps and ear defenders!ā
Top tip - Did you know we include everything you need to get started with the tools at no extra cost?
Maybe you've already got a shed, but want to make your bike extra secure like William did, by renting the SDS Drill to install a bike anchor.
2. Get your shed sorted šŖ
Whether it's renting the Trolley to help save time on your shed clear-out like Jackie, or to help transport your old shed to the tip like a Kentish Town member.
Maybe you're more like Maria who rented the Reciprocating Saw and Multi-Cutter to take down their old shed, and then build a new one!
Perhaps a smaller project like this Dalston member is more your Thing - "First-time user and just loved it - rented a Circular Saw and built the frame for a small shed! So proud. Yay!"
3. Get the garden autumn ready š
Rent the Secateurs to deadhead your plants like Rose did, or if you like being super organised you can start collecting materials from the garden, to dry and use to make a wreath. If you're planting bulbs ready for spring, why not plant something native?
Autumn is the perfect time to get a head start on making repairs in the garden by sorting the decking and raised beds - or building some from scratch like Aine did using the Circular Saw.
Speak to your neighbours about creating a hedgehog highway ready for when they come out of hibernation. You could rent the Multi-Cutter and use it to cut a tiny hole in each of your fences to help our spikey friends.
Top tip - Seed collection isn't just a great way to save money, it's great for conservation too. You can find out more about how to do it here.
4. Reduce waste in your garden š
Louise used the Drill to make a compost bin at their newly acquired allotment, a Crystal Palace member got creative by renting the Shredder so that they could compost their paper waste. Compost is great to use as 'mulch' which helps add nutrients to your soil over winter.
A Sutton member used the Circular Saw to cut up their old decking so they could take it to be recycled, while Samantha cut up some tree off-cuts from the garden into usable firewood.
You could even install a water butt to make the most of the wetter months so that you don't need to rely on the hosepipe next year.
Top tip - If you don't have anywhere for a compost bin, you can still give your waste a second chance by finding a neighbour's bin to take it to using ShareWaste.
